  • 2. Seek Assistance: Now that you have accepted your debt as a problem, you need to seek assistance. There are a number of debt consolidation companies ready and available to help you tackle you debts. Debt consolidation and debt settlement companies, help you combine all of your bills into a single monthly payment. Many times you will even be given a lower interest rate when you turn to a debt consolidation agency for help.
  • 3. Get Counseling: Prior to making the call for help, you should gather a list of all of your bills and other debts. Make sure to know the due date of each bill, the name of the person you owe the money to, the total amount of your debt, what your current interest rate is, and your current monthly payment. Having this information ready will help your debt counselor get a better understanding of your debts, and find the best solution for you.
  • 4. Living On A Budget: Your debt counselor will now help you prepare a monthly budget. The budget will be based on your monthly income and the amount of your monthly expenses. After all of your living expenses are paid, the amount that remains will go towards paying off your debts.
  • 5. Let’s Make A Deal: This step will allow your debt counselor to work with your creditors in order to get you the best deal they can. Your debt counselor will work to get you the lowest interest rate possible and help to lower your monthly payments. If you are trying to settle your debt, your counselor will negotiate with your creditors about reducing your total outstanding balances.
  • 6. Show Them The Money: Each month, you will be making a single monthly payment to your debt agency. The debt agency will than divide that money up and pay each of your creditors. This process will continue until all of your debts have been paid in full. If you have chosen debt settlement, you need to stop paying your creditors and make the payment to the debt settlement company. They will continue to take your payments each month. The payments add up each month, until the total amount of your debt is able to be paid to the original creditor.
  • 7. No More Debt: There is one last step to take. Make sure when you are in a debt consolidation program, you do not take on any new debt. New debt will only make it harder to live the dream of a debt free life.
